Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) has recently enacted a policy that requires all of its more than 500 offices to include gays and lesbians in the volunteers that it matches to children as mentors. Furthermore, parents will not be told if their child has been matched with a homosexual big brother or big sister.

BBBSA is a school based program that provides one-to-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and children primarily from single-parent families. This organization has done some truly notable work but this new policy is at best, ill advised.

Though this policy has thus far received little press in the liberal media, it has begun to draw strong criticism. Dr. James Dobson, founder of the organization Focus on the Family has rescinded his endorsement of BBBSA and Dr. Bill Maier vice president and psychologist in residence for Family.org states:

In light of the ongoing sex scandal involving Catholic priests, the new policy of "inclusion" by Big Brothers Big Sisters appears reckless and irresponsible. Many of the priests charged with sexually abusing children and adolescents have admitted they are homosexuals. They used their position of authority to sexually violate those who trusted them the most. BBBSA's decision to match fatherless boys, starving for male attention, with gay men is a recipe for disaster.

It's disappointing to see an organization that is supposed work within the best interests of the children, compromise itself to the same liberal views of the special interest groups that have attacked the Boy Scouts.

Could the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America have enacted this policy fearing the loss of support from some of its sponsors (listed below)? If so, I'm sure that they could find more. At this point however, the organization stands to loose clients (parents and children) that truly need help.
